Overview

This longitudinal professional development program is designed to cultivate the next generation of leaders in health professions education. With a strong foundation in educator competencies, the program empowers health care professionals to thrive as effective teachers, adaptive leaders, and innovative change agents in dynamic clinical and academic environments. Participants engage in a comprehensive curriculum that fosters self-reflection, promotes career advancement, and supports the development of impactful educational projects.

About the Program

Grounded in six core themes—Educational Theory & Practice, Curriculum Design, Scholarship of Teaching & Learning, Leadership & Change Management, Innovation, and Personal & Professional Growth—the curriculum addresses the multifaceted nature of educational leadership in health care. Participants strengthen their instructional approaches using evidence-based methods, design and refine meaningful curricula, engage in scholarly teaching practices, and build the leadership capabilities necessary to navigate complex systems. The program also nurtures personal reflection and strategic career planning, enabling participants to become transformative leaders in the field of health professions education. 

Program Format

The program consists of two immersive sessions: a five-day virtual fall session (Part I) and a five-day in-residence spring session (Part II) at Harvard Medical School, with monthly virtual continuity sessions in between. 

Who Should Apply

Ideal for early- to mid-career health professionals engaged in teaching, curriculum development, or educational leadership, this course is designed for those looking to strengthen their educator skill set, grow as leaders, and advance their careers in academic medicine or health professions education.

Adam Rodman, MD, MPH, FACP

Co-director, Media and Education Delivery Initiative, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Assistant Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School 

Adams’s academic interests include digital education, clinical reasoning, and human-computer interaction. In addition to his research, Adam hosts a podcast called Bedside Rounds that discusses medical history, and he recently published his first book, "Short Cuts: Medicine.”

Monica Higgins, MBA, PhD
Kathleen McCartney Professor of Education Leadership, Harvard Graduate School of Education 

Monica is the Kathleen McCartney professor of education leadership at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She focuses her research and teaching on areas of leadership development, organizational change, entrepreneurship, teams, and strategic human resources management. She is a member of the Public Education Leadership Project and leads the Scaling for Impact initiative. In addition to her teaching, Monica has published several books on many different topics, ranging from leadership development in the biotechnology industry to women in leadership in K-12 education.

Applicants must submit a project proposal and meet specific deadlines.

To prepare your application for submission, please have the following documents available:

  • Current contact information, credentials, and scholarly background: This information helps us to form the diverse interprofessional and international groups that are the hallmark of the Harvard Macy Institute programs.
  • Project Information: During this program, you will collaborate with a small group of scholars on a project that you propose to implement at your home institution. This project is intended to address a specific issue or institutional challenge and will be central to your learning experience at Harvard. Please note, if accepted to the program the project description will be shared with fellow attendees and faculty to facilitate collaboration. We recognize your project may be in its preliminary stages and hope to support you to refine and develop your ideas throughout the program. Your project idea should include:
    • Project title
    • Project description (Include goals and what question, concern, problem, or situation is addressed by your project.)
    • Project Context (Include the number of individuals who will be impacted by your project. Which key leaders, stakeholders, participants, and/or systems will influence its success? What barriers do you anticipate in completing this project?)
    • Project Outcomes (What outcome(s) will define success for your project and what is the plan for measuring those outcomes?)

There is no application fee for this program.
