How are programs delivered?

At the top of each program page, you'll find key details such as the program dates, location, and the learning format used to deliver the program. Here's a brief explanation of each learning format or modality:

  • Blended: A combination of in-person and online learning. Some sessions may be held in a classroom, others may be delivered live online, and some may be asynchronous online. Physical attendance is required for all in-person sessions.
  • In-Person: Learning that takes place in a single program location with faculty and your cohort gathered together. Physical attendance is required for all sessions.

  • Live Online; In-Person: These programs offer attendance online or in-person.
  • Online; Self-paced: Asynchronous learning where participants access pre-recorded materials at their convenience. For on-demand courses, materials can be accessed and completed at any time. No travel is required for Online programs.

What is the time commitment for programs?

Time commitments vary by program. Please review each program page for specific time commitment guidance for that program.

Will I be notified if the program is cancelled or rescheduled?

It is rare for Harvard Medical School to cancel or reschedule a program. However, if a program is cancelled or rescheduled, you will be notified of the change via email from our team.

Harvard Medical School is not responsible for losses due to cancellation of flights, non-issuance of visas, non-refundable accommodation charges or any other costs incurred by learners, including in the event that program dates are changed.

Do you offer programs for companies, institutions, or groups to take together?

Yes. We are happy to provide some additional information regarding group enrollments for your organization. Group enrollment agreements are available with a commitment of 11+ seats for live programs or 25+ seats for HMX Online programs.

Application and Registration Requirements

What pre-requisites or prior degrees do I need to have to enroll in a program?

Pre-requisites or prior experience requirements vary by program. Visit the requirements section of each program page to learn more.

Are programs open to learners outside the United States?

Yes, our programs welcome qualified learners from all over the world. We proudly have alumni from more than 100 countries globally. For programs with in-person components, learners are responsible for obtaining the necessary travel documents to attend the mandatory in-person program workshops.

Do I need to speak English proficiently?

The language of instruction at Harvard Medical School is English. Proficiency in the language is essential for meaningful engagement in the learning experience.

Can I take more than one program at a time?

This depends on the program type and your level of bandwidth. HMX Online programs were designed to support enrollment in multiple courses at a time. However, live programs may be more challenging due to scheduling conflicts and time commitment. If you need assistance in understanding which program is right for you, please contact our admissions and enrollment team

When will I hear about my application decision?

Completed applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with limited exceptions. Most applicants will receive an admissions decision within 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the volume of submissions. All complete applications submitted by the deadline will be reviewed, with decisions shared before the enrollment deposit deadline.

When should I book travel for my program?

We recommend booking refundable travel and accommodations after enrolling in the program. If you require a visa, please wait until it has been issued before making travel arrangements. Harvard Medical School is not responsible for any costs incurred, including non-refundable travel or accommodation, visa issues, or changes to program dates.

Who should I contact for questions about my visa application?

Your consulate is best suited to help clarify your visa application questions. The admissions email you receive serves as the official documentation for visa purposes. We recommend that you save the email in pdf format and print a hardcopy.

If you are a citizen of a country participating in the Visa Waiver Program, a visa is not required. All other participants must obtain a visa—typically a B-1 visa for business visitors.

It is your responsibility to review and follow U.S. State Department guidelines to determine visa requirements and initiate the application process. Visa processing can be lengthy, you are expected to begin the application immediately upon acceptance.

Harvard Medical School does not provide visa assistance.

Please note: Program participants are not considered full-time students at Harvard University and are not eligible for F-1 student visa sponsorship.

For programs held outside the United States, you must check with your local consulate for country-specific visa requirements.

Countries where consular consultation is advised:

  • Malaysia
  • People’s Republic of China
  • United Kingdom
  • United States
