Overview

Pancreatic diseases are common gastrointestinal disorders; however, there is significant variability in the way patients are diagnosed and managed. The goal of this course to provide real-world education to practicing clinicians nationally and internationally in order to improve patient outcomes. Our target audience includes not only experts from HMS, but also community and other academic providers that will benefit from in depth knowledge regarding pancreatic diseases. Both course directors are medical pancreatologists who run multidisciplinary pancreas programs are their respective institutions. Topics and speakers for each talk were selected based on personal clinical experience and through multidisciplinary discussions of knowledge gaps which exist when providing care to patients. The goal is to provide world-expert education to all clinicians who care for patients with pancreatic disorders. All course faculty were selected with the HMS Diversity Statement in mind. A concerted effort was made to achieve the appropriate representation of women, racial/ethnic minorities, and persons with disabilities, and other individuals underrepresented in medicine. We have a number of international faculty from facilities in Spain, Netherlands, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Sweden, to name a few. 16 of the 38 lectures are from HMS-affilitated faculty.

The following topics will be covered: acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cysts, and autoimmune and hereditary pancreatitis.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss management of acute pancreatitis based on randomized clinical trial results.
  • Apply the best evidence-based management of pancreatic adenocarcinoma and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors.
  • Discuss the management of common pediatric pancreatic illnesses.
  • Update the management of chronic pancreatitis and its complications.
  • Identify the management of autoimmune pancreatitis based on evidence from observational studies and the experience of centres with a high volume of patients with this disease.
  • Discuss the diagnosis, surveillance and treatment of pancreatic cysts.
