Overview

Health care delivery is entering a period of profound transformation. Advances in digital medicine and artificial intelligence—combined with evolving payment models and regulatory frameworks—are reshaping how care is designed, delivered, and sustained. In this new environment, leaders must understand not only emerging technologies, but also the clinical, operational, and policy realities that determine whether those technologies succeed in practice. 

This hybrid postgraduate certificate program integrates clinical, regulatory, and market perspectives to provide participants with a comprehensive framework for evaluating, adopting, and scaling technology-enabled models of care. Through case-based learning, applied exercises, and interactive on-campus sessions in Boston, participants move beyond theoretical discussions to examine how tools such as remote patient monitoring, hospital-at-home models, and artificial intelligence (AI) driven administrative, diagnostic, and treatment support solutions can be responsibly implemented within today’s complex health care systems.

About the Program

This program develops the strategic, operational, and practical skills required to lead technology-enabled transformation in health care delivery. Participants will build fluency in digital medicine, artificial intelligence, payment policy, and regulatory strategy while learning how to evaluate and implement innovations within complex clinical environments. Designed for both experienced leaders and emerging innovators, the program strengthens participants’ ability to translate digital opportunity into sustainable clinical impact.

Program Format

This program combines online sessions with a required three-day, in-person workshop in Boston. Prior to the on-campus experience, participants engage in structured virtual learning designed to establish foundational knowledge.

During the in-person workshop, participants take part in case-based discussions, interactive sessions, and hands-on skill development exercises. The program culminates in the development of a formal implementation proposal addressing a real-world challenge in the participant’s home organization.

Curriculum

Program participants will engage in a structured blend of preparatory online learning and an immersive, in-person workshop experience. Foundational sessions introduce the architecture of digital medicine, artificial intelligence, payment policy, and regulatory strategy, establishing a shared framework for evaluating technology-enabled care models.

Interactive case discussions, applied exercises, and hands-on skill-building sessions deepen participants’ understanding of hospital-at-home programs, remote patient monitoring, digital health applications, and AI-driven clinical and administrative tools. Throughout the curriculum, emphasis is placed on practical implementation within existing clinical workflows and complex health system environments.

The program culminates in the development of a formal workplace implementation proposal. This capstone project requires participants to apply structured need-finding methodologies, assess stakeholders and regulatory considerations, and design a detailed plan for deploying an existing digital solution to address a specific challenge within their home institution.

Participants will collaborate in interdisciplinary teams to design and develop a formal implementation proposal addressing a real-world challenge within their current organization.

Using existing digital or AI-enabled technologies, teams will identify a specific clinical, operational, or strategic problem and propose a practical, scalable solution. The final deliverable will include an implementation roadmap, regulatory and governance considerations, stakeholder engagement strategy, and measurable outcomes to assess impact.

Faculty guidance and peer feedback will support refinement of each proposal to ensure feasibility, rigor, and real-world applicability. 

The interactive workshop curriculum focuses on hands-on skill development through active, applied learning. The intensive three-day, in-person workshop in Boston accelerates participants’ ability to evaluate, design, and implement digital and AI-enabled solutions through individual and team-based exercises. Participants will be immersed in a dynamic learning environment that encourages collaboration and cross-disciplinary engagement with faculty and peers.

One multiday workshop will take place in-person in Boston and is preceded by preparatory online sessions. All activities will be highly interactive and will include expert-led presentations, facilitated discussions, and real-world implementation scenarios focused on integrating digital technologies within existing health care systems. 

The program will include recorded online lectures and live webinars with Harvard faculty, divided between program modules.

Live interactive webinars will complement the recorded lecture curriculum.

Each of the modules will incorporate knowledge-check quizzes.

All participants must complete the following academic and attendance requirements in order to be granted a Certificate of Completion from Harvard Medical School.

Attendance at Workshops and Webinars

Learners are required to attend and actively engage in all workshops.

Learners may be required to attend live, interactive webinars scheduled in between workshops. If a learner cannot attend due to an occasional scheduling conflict, it may be possible to complete an alternative assignment.

Successful Completion of Assignments

Learners are required to complete and submit on time and receive passing grades on course-related assignments. These may include quizzes, exams, and individual or team-based assignments.

This is a blended program, which combines online foundational content, webinars, peer discussions, and a team capstone project, with a required three-day in-person workshop in Boston. 

Participants who meet the program's academic and attendance requirements earn a Certificate of Completion from Harvard Medical School and join a global network of HMS learners. 

The curriculum spans six areas: foundations of digital health, artificial intelligence in medicine, data and health informatics, designing and implementing digital solutions, leadership and strategy, and evaluating value and future directions. It concludes with a team-based capstone project. 

In the capstone project, participants work in interdisciplinary teams to design a formal, workplace-ready implementation proposal. It addresses a real clinical, operational, or strategic challenge at their own organization using existing digital or AI-enabled technology, including an implementation roadmap, regulatory considerations, and a stakeholder engagement strategy. 

The program is co-led by Dr. William Gordon, a physician and health technology leader who recently served as Chief Informatics Officer for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, where he guided national efforts in interoperability, digital quality measurement, and health IT modernization, and by Dr. Ariel Stern, Professor and Chair for Digital Health, Economics & Policy at the University of Potsdam, who spent a decade on the faculty at Harvard Business School and whose expertise spans digital health, health care innovation, economics, and policy.
