From Network Engineer to Health Care Insider
"The program gave me a deeper appreciation for the complexity of the health care system, from drug discovery and development to funding flows and stakeholder dynamics."
What initially drew you to the HealthXcelerate: Strategy, Policy, and Systems program, and where were you in your professional journey when you decided to enroll?
I joined Moderna about a year and a half ago after more than 15 years as a senior network engineer, primarily in finance and enterprise environments. While I had worked on projects for health agencies and hospitals, I was new to the pharmaceutical and manufacturing space. I enrolled in HealthXcelerate out of curiosity and a desire to better understand the broader ecosystem beyond my technical role. I wanted insight into how decisions are made in a highly regulated, mission-driven health care environment and to grow as a leader aligned with Moderna’s purpose.
How did the program shape or expand your understanding of how health care operates?
The program gave me a deeper appreciation for the complexity of the health care system, from drug discovery and development to funding flows and stakeholder dynamics. What stood out most was how interconnected everything is. Beyond scientific and operational challenges, the program highlighted how policy, economics, and individual behaviors all shape outcomes. It gave me a more holistic view of health care as an ecosystem rather than a set of isolated processes.
Were there any course topics or perspectives that stood out as especially impactful or that challenged how you previously thought about health care?
Two topics were especially impactful: Drug Development from Discovery through Approval and Health Care Policy and Economics.
The Drug Development module strengthened my appreciation for the rigor behind scientific advancement. Seeing the full end-to-end process—from early discovery through approval—and the extensive quality controls and audits involved reinforced why these safeguards are essential for safety, efficacy, and trust.
The Health Care Policy and Economics module reshaped my perspective in a more personal way. It clarified how funding flows through the health care system and how policy decisions influence access and population health. Learning how different health care models operate across countries prompted reflection on how individual actions connect to broader system costs.
In what ways has the program influenced how you approach your work or think about your role within the health care industry?
The program influenced how I view my role in technology. It reinforced that strong science depends on strong digital infrastructure. I now think more intentionally about how innovation can support researchers and manufacturing teams—not just maintain systems, but also improve efficiency, scalability, and quality. I’ve begun exploring how technologies like AI and automation can be thoughtfully introduced to enable meaningful impact.
Overall, HealthXcelerate helped me see IT as part of a larger, interconnected system and strengthened my commitment to using technology to enable innovation and reliability.
What advice would you give to someone considering participating in the HealthXcelerate: Strategy, Policy, and Systems program?
My advice is simple: don’t delay. The program provides context and clarity that daily work alone cannot. It connects strategy, policy, and real-world health care systems in a way that makes complex ideas accessible and relevant. For me, it reignited curiosity and deepened my appreciation for the health care ecosystem.
