About
David N. Bernstein, MD, PhD, MBA, MEI, is a Chief Resident in orthopaedic surgery in the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program (HCORP) based out of Mass General Brigham, Beth Israel Lahey Health, and Boston Children’s Hospital / Harvard Medical School, as well as an Affiliate Scholar at the Hopkins Business of Health Initiative (HBHI). He recently completed his appointment as a senior researcher at Harvard Business School, where he worked alongside Professors Michael E. Porter and Robert (Bob) S. Kaplan to help drive solutions to ongoing health care delivery system challenges, and has been a Visiting Professor at prestigious universities internationally, focusing on the intersection of care delivery, business, and policy.
David is a prolific health services scientist with a focus on health care delivery system transformation, including outcomes and experience measurement, payment and financing reform, transparency, and competition. He is sought after key opinion leader worldwide. He is an Executive Consultant to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), the Special Advisor for Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) to the Orthopaedic Surgeon-in-Chief at Boston Children’s Hospital, former Clinical Advisor within the Department of Population Health Management at Mass General Brigham, and current Special Assistant to the Chief Integration Officer at Mass General Brigham. Further, he has collaborated with numerous think tanks on research publications and advised government officials nationally and internationally on health care transformation initiatives. He has served as a fellow at the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) and participated in the invite-only Emerging Leaders Forum at NAM, which recognizes early- and mid-career professionals with exceptional professional promise, achievement, and leadership in health and related fields.
To date, he has published nearly 150 manuscripts in top scientific journals, co-authored a variety of opinion pieces and commentary articles in popular business and mainstream media outlets (Harvard Business Review (HBR), Fox News, The Boston Globe, STAT, The Hill, New York Daily News, among others), and written several research reports for well-respected think tanks. He has contributed to a white paper produced by the World Economic Forum (WEF) and was the lead author on the latest G20 publication on health and health care delivery system sustainability in times of crisis. He is the first trainee to ever be elected to an at-large seat on the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Board of Directors, a position typically held by health system CEOs or medical school deans. He is a current David Rockefeller Fellow with The Trilateral Commission, Term Member at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), and former participant in the Presidential Leadership Scholars (PLS) program, a highly selective leadership development program through four U.S. Presidential Libraries and Centers. He was also appointed by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg’s Ministry of Economy and Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs as a foreign trader advisor (volunteer) with jurisdiction over the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to advise on bilateral trade and economic development and business interests between the United States and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
David received his Doctor of Medicine (MD) with Distinction in Research from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in health care transformation from the University of Leiden in The Netherlands, and Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Simon Business School at the University of Rochester, where he was elected to the Beta Gamma Sigma honor society. In addition, he holds his Master in Entrepreneurship and Innovation with Distinction from the University of Luxembourg as a Fulbright Scholar. His Bachelor of Arts (AB) in Economics is from Bowdoin College.
