Overview
This inaugural course provides timely, clinically relevant and contemporary updates in the practice of Gynecologic and Obstetric Pathology. The course is organized and delivered by nationally and internationally renowned experts in gynecologic and obstetric pathology at Mass General Brigham.
Emphasis is given to important shifts in pathology definitions, classification, diagnostic criteria, and staging of gynecologic and obstetric conditions, reflecting recommendations by the World Health Organization Classification, the American Joint Committee on Cancer and International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology staging systems, and practice guidelines (such as the College of American Pathologists, International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, and the European Society of Gynecologic Oncology). Critical updates in each organ system and disease category are organized in dedicated lectures, focusing on practical guidance and rules for general practicing pathologists. About half of the course content is dedicated to slide sessions, in which illustrative examples of critical diagnostic entities and their differential diagnoses are discussed by the experts, mirroring a real-practice sign-out setting. Emerging and diagnostically challenging entities are covered in detail. Both lectures and slide sessions are designed to be interactive and promote participation by the audience.
Learning Objectives
- Understand and apply in daily practice essential resources, including the upcoming WHO classification of tumors of the female reproductive system, the Amsterdam consensus guideline on placental pathology, the most recent updates to the FIGO staging systems, ICCR resources, and current NCCN guidelines for the management of patients with gynecologic cancer.
- Identify the scenarios in which diagnosis of non-epithelial (mesenchymal, sex-cord stromal, gestational) gynecologic neoplasia, as per WHO criteria, requires molecular testing as an essential criterion, and how to proceed when such testing is not available.
- Identify the most common pathologic lesions found in the placenta, understanding their relevance in terms of correlation with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes, recurrence in future gestations and need for immediate / prompt intervention.
- Discuss the role of biomarker testing in the diagnosis, prognosis and management of patients with ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, and cervical cancer.
- Appraise emerging information on clinically relevant forms of endometrial, upper genital and mesenchymal gynecologic neoplasia.
- Describe the novel classification systems for lower genital tract neoplasia including the currently recommended nomenclature.
- Recognize forms of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia applying strict diagnostic criteria and judicious use of ancillary testing.
